beautiful summer friday

2010-07-23 11.59.46

A perfectly weathered July Friday, at the Irvine Regional Park with friends:
  • taking a train ride through a bit of the park
  • learning a little about the park (California's oldest regional park at 112 years old)
  • riding bikes through sunshine, shade and breezes
  • enjoying the Orange County Zoo with bears, foxes, owls and other native creatures
  • feeding and petting friendly goats
  • having an afternoon picnic
Wonderful day. Wonderful friends. Wonderful happiness :)

a swell time for sure

I've taken almost a whole week to share a pretty memorable event for us three so forgive me. Last Sunday we took Natalie to her first official concert at the Hollywood Bowl to see the Bird and the Bee, She & Him and the Swell Season! We were so excited to be going to see these great performers but more so because Nat was with us. We are big fans of She & Him and so is she. It was so awesome to see her get giddy even though our seats were a bit far off. She dance and smiled and sang along to Zoeey Deschanel and M. Ward. I wish I had some more photos but these are good enough to mark the happy day...

alligators and parakeets...

Yes, it's true. Alligators are my current favorite creature. Don't worry, owls are not put on the back burner but are taking a little rest at the moment. :) I've been thinking of stories lately, as I have mentioned before and I am hoping a new endeavor and collaboration is coming into fruition soon but that's all I can share at the moment! Until then, I'll share my most current drawn girl with her pet alligator and parakeet (who likes to nest in her hair, of course). I couldn't decide which dress color I liked most so I thought to give her four different colors. I personally think she looks great in all of them and I am also thinking this might not be the last time we see her...

And speaking of parakeets, I tweeted last week that Pip did not make it. Long story short, we believe (along with the store we got Pip from) that he was not well when we purchased him. It was of course sad, and we waited a few days but today we have brought home another (and hopefully) last feathered friend. She is beautiful and Natalie has named her Pip Jane or PJ. We are all wishing PJ a long life with us so here is hoping and praying!

pip jane....also known as pj...

Now I must tend to other thoughts and ideas while having my weekly movie night with my bubelah. We will be feasting on kettle korn popcorn, rainer cherries, veggie sticks and crisps and marshmallows, oh my! :)

the swan comes in summer...

Summer has finally remembered us here in Southern California. Yesterday was its first day and today is the day that I accept it. July has been productive in ways of ideas. I've been stealing away moments here and there for sketching, drawing and coloring. I've done several little drawings and though I never share their 'stories', in my head, I see the stories, I hear it.

I've just changed the header on my blog to the above illustration. Who knows how long it will stay but for now it's here and I love the story it brings me. When I started drawing this in my sketchbook, I was thinking of girl who rides upon a black swan in the dead of night, through the marshes, guided by a jar filled with fireflies. She seems like a ghost that helps the dreams of the nearby children make their way. Or at least, something like that.

I am sure with the heat upon us now, I'll have more ideas. There is so much to do (along with a few sewing projects I really need to get a move on) but I'll have to time it right. To fit the summer vacation schedule with both Natalie and Rick and working around the inevitable heat. I hope I will continue to be productive with imagination, creation and progress. Until then, hello summer, hello...

a tiny show featuring brobee

This was a little recording taken about a year or so ago. Actually, I am trying hard to remember Nat's exact age but I'll just say really early five years old...

a little LA adventure

We began our day at a Korean Bakery munching on pastries filled with red beans, sweet pea and pumpkin. We decided to spend our day out with Venice Beach being our first destination. We weren't going for the actual beach, the street performers or all the crazy shops and people (yet we still experienced it all!) but for Mollusk Surf Shop. Rick heard that Jenny Lewis had a new single out with her boyfriend and they would be available for free.

The shop had a lot of really cool t-shirts with fantastic art. There was no Jenny Lewis but a few look a likes entered the shop. We got our free single on cassette and headed towards or next stop. On the way out of Venice though, I did catch Tim Robbins coming out of a little shop, gray hair, big smile and all. I was so excited I forgot his name for a minute but finally had to say 'the dad from Zathura'! Of course, at that point, Nat completely knew who I was talking about.

Next was the Griffith Observatory. We love that place and it was especially appropriate since Saturday was Nikola Tesla's birthday. The observatory actually has a Tesla Coil there so we watched a little bit of an electric show.

After looking around a bit, we got back in the car and headed towards the bottom of the park. There was a little area there called Fern Dell and what a delightful stroll we had.

Our last few minutes there we felt a bit of drizzle and were surprised to see the roads wet with rain. Rain in July, crazy...

a goodbye and a hello

natalie and brobee!

Saturday was a great day of local adventure filled with nice sceneries, interesting places and much picture taking. I do want to share our day here but first I need to address a heavier matter. After we returned home,  with much sadness, Rick shared with me that our dear little rabbit, Brobee had passed away. Instantly my heart broke, for the rabbit, for myself but more so for Natalie. I knew she would be devasted. She had him since he was this tiny little fluff and was her sweetest, most accessible pet. She loved to show him to others when we would have visitors and she just got the 'official' chore of checking his food and water. I am thankful to His providence that the day was so busy, she didn't do it. It was better for Rick to have found him (and not me as well). We knew we had to tell her but waiting until he was ready to be buried.

After Rick finished preparing Brobee's final resting place in the backyard, he along with my dad, came into the room to tell Nat. My heart ached the more at her instant reaction of complete grieving. I never seen her so heartbroken and tears from both our eyes spilled. What hurt most was that she kept saying how he was her only pet, her last pet that only belonged to her and how she was alone now. I couldn't help but to think of her, my child, my only child, who feels so 'alone' because she doesn't have any siblings. I know how she longs for companionship. I see it with the way she constantly wants to interact with us even when are discussing or addressing 'grown up' matters. I see it how she attaches herself to certain friends and cousins more than I see reciprocated at times. Her heart was truly broken and it also made me think of what will happen when a family member passes. I thought how awful it is going to be for her, if only I could save her from such pain. I quickly realized that there is no such thing as a safe place from death since it is and always will be a part of life.

bubelah and brobee

We did our best to comfort and to console her. While Rick placed Brobee in the ground, Nattie and I picked some flowers from the front yard to place on his grave. We waited until some dirt was put over him so that the shock would not further add to our pain before we went out. Natalie helped Rick put the rest of the earth over him and we set sticks, flowers and candles over his grave. She asked God to please take good care of him in heaven and that she loved him. She also had us share just a little bit about him while we were gathered around him. It was warm and touching and I am so happy that we all had a chance to say goodbye.

While we stood around, I thought about how the only real way to deal with things is to just deal with it when it comes. You can't ignore it or brush it away. Death will happen. Even though she already been through the deaths of her little hamsters, this was the heaviest. Brobee meant more and I believe, represented more to her. It was difficult, it was but we did our best to talk to her and to explain things a bit more.

I don't want any one to suffer, especially a child, but we will all experience it. I don't want to nor do I want my loved ones too but it's inevitable. We had her stay in the room with us that night and talked a bit about it and when it was right, to lighten the sadness a bit with life. It was a sad night of love, regret, pain and goodbyes but the remembrance of him is what will stay in our hearts always.

So, where it seems one thing ends, another begins and on Sunday afternoon a new friend came to stay with us. While I napped from our return after church, Nattie and Rick went to the pet store to just to see what pets would be right for us. They came home and shared with me about a beautiful pale blue parakeet that she liked and would name him Pip if she got him. Later with Nat being watched by my mom, Rick, myself and my dad went to go get her new friend.

Pip is truly a beautiful bird and a nice addition to our family. I hope and pray we always do what is right by him and for us all to enjoy him. Needless to say, she is delighted over her bird. She is out spending the day with Rick right now but made sure to tell me to take good care of Pip. We even put his arrival to our home in our family diary.

We are thankful to life, in everything it brings, to it's love and heartbreaks too. Here's to life...
